Custody Conciliation Conference in Pennsylvania

Updated: Aug 7

As family law attorneys practicing in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, we often assist clients with custody disputes during the custody conciliation conference process. This process is designed to help parents come to an agreement on custody and visitation issues without the need for a costly and time-consuming trial.

In most counties in Pennsylvania, if the conciliation process does not result in an agreement, the matter is scheduled for a trial. However, in the 26th Judicial District, which includes Columbia County, there is an exception to this rule. After the conciliation conference, the conference officer makes a recommendation to the court on how to resolve the custody dispute. This recommendation is not binding on the court, but it is given significant weight and is often adopted by the court.

The custody conciliation conference process begins with the appointment of a conference officer, who is typically a trained mediator or a family law attorney. The conference officer meets with the parties, either individually or jointly, to discuss the custody dispute and help them reach an agreement. The conference officer may also speak with any relevant witnesses, review relevant documents, and make recommendations to the parties on how to resolve the dispute.

If the parties are unable to reach an agreement during the conciliation conference, the conference officer will make a recommendation to the court on how to resolve the dispute. This recommendation may include a proposed custody and visitation schedule, as well as any other recommendations the conference officer believes would be in the best interests of the child or children involved.

At Moro & Moro, we understand that custody disputes can be emotionally and financially draining for all parties involved. That is why we strive to help our clients navigate the custody conciliation conference process as smoothly as possible and achieve a resolution that is in the best interests of their children.
